Instruction will be provided by Don Lake, Professor of Art at Parkland College in Champaign, Illinois, where
he has taught watercolor, drawing and color theory for thirty-five years. Don holds BFA and MFA degrees
from Wichita State University. Since the late 1980's his realist watercolor studio work has centered upon
American industrial sites and the prairie landscape.
On location he teaches workshops emphasizing watercolor painting and drawing. Painting on location invites
some watercolor treatments and discourages others. The professor will offer instruction and critiques in
effective ways to work on the spot. Since drawing is the basis for a good painting and forms the foundation
for working on location, he will emphasize careful "seeing" and capturing an accurate sense of place. Painting
on site suggests a direct approach, but some time will be spent on more precise choices and to encourage each
artist to find ways to blend new techniques into his or her own familiar methods. Beginners are welcome to join
this exciting experience.
